Born November 4, 1924 in Ravenna, Nebraska
to Wallace Way Mingus and Lenore Pegau Mingus. He passed away on March
24, 2009 at his home in Northridge, California. Wallace was a World War
II veteran. Anxious to serve his country, he quit High School at 17 and
enlisted in the United States Marine Corp. He was called Lucky after
being the 13th man to disembark from his ship in the Philippines. After
the War he married his childhood sweetheart, Jeannine Van Hoosen, on
June 28th 1946. They moved to California and started a family. He worked
hard to receive his high school diploma and took some college classes.
Wallace was employed by the Defense Industry as an electrical engineer
for 40 years. Due to his expertise, Wallace earned his teaching
credential and taught Logic and Engineering for LA Valley College for
over 35 years. After retirin g, Wallace kept busy inventing things,
reading, writing, and volunteering for AOL as a writing critic. He
regularly corresponded with his many cyber-friends and fans. Wallace
loved puzzles and was a master Sudoku player. He also liked playing
golf, playing cards, going to the theater, visiting with family,
watching basketball, and eating out.
Wallace is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jeannine; and three children, Lynda (Michael) Shirley of Gilbert, Arizona, Jill (Marvin) McGlynn of Saugus, Californi a, and Scott Mingus of Salt Lake City, Utah. He is also survived by his 16 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and two brothers, Ralph (Judy) Mingus and Jim (Ursula) Mingus of Dannenbrog, Nebraska. Wallace is preceded in death by his beloved son, Michael; parents, Wallace Mingus and Lenore Mokry; step-parents, Anna Mingus and William Mokry; brothers, Bill Mokry, Donald Mokry, and Joe Mingus; and sisters, Darleen, and Gayleen Mingus. A memorial of his life will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2:00 p.m ., Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints , 17101 Plummer St., Northridge. A private interment will be on April 1, 2009 at Eternal Valley Cemetery, Newhall. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity. A jokester to the end, his final request was to "Surprise Me!" So his family will honor this request and "bury" him on April Fool's Day. |
